UEA is committed to helping reduce the barriers to participation in Higher Education (HE) faced by those seeking asylum in the UK. For the 2021/22 academic year, UEA will offer up to four Sanctuary Scholarships and two Pre-sessional English Sanctuary Scholarships. Full details on the scholarships available can be found below.
UEA Sanctuary Scholarships (Fees and Bursary)
Sanctuary applicants who are seeking asylum in the UK and are not entitled to receive statutory student financial support from Student Finance England may apply for a UEA Sanctuary Scholarship (fees and bursary).
The successful applicants will receive:
- Full Tuition Fee Support. Students will be offered a 100% tuition fee waiver.
- Maintenance Support. In addition to a tuition fee waiver, students will be awarded a bursary of £3,000 a year towards living costs and course related expenses.
These will be awarded until such time as you are awarded status that enables you to access student finance. The applicant will then be removed from the scholarship effective from the next academic year, when they will be able to apply for student support.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this Scholarship, applicants must:
a. Have applied for a place at UEA and met the offer conditions;
b. Be an asylum seeker in the UK or a person granted Discretionary Leave /
Humanitarian Protection in the UK and unable to qualify for support from Student
Finance England;
c. Not apply for a course at the UEA with a qualification aim that is equal to or lower
than a qualification they already possess;
d. Not apply for a course at the UEA within the Norwich Medical School.
e. OR; Current UEA students seeking asylum will be considered for the scholarship if no
applications for their level of study have been received in the annual admissions
cycle
UEA Sanctuary Scholarship (Fee Only Award)
Sanctuary applicants who have Refugee status or Humanitarian Protection and are ineligible for course fee loan funding from Student Finance England, due to their possessing a qualification that is equal to or lower than the course qualification being aimed for, may apply for a fees only award.
The successful applicants will receive:
- Full Tuition Fee Support. Students will be offered a 100% tuition fee waiver. The applicant’s maintenance support will be provided by Student Finance England.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this Scholarship, applicants must:
a. Have applied for an undergraduate place at UEA and met the offer conditions;
b. Be recognised by the UK government as a Refugee or have Humanitarian Protection;
c. Apply for a course at the UEA with a qualification aim that is equal to or lower than a
qualification they already possess;
d. Apply to Student Finance England for a maintenance loan.
UEA/INTO UEA Pre-sessional English Scholarship
In partnership with INTO UEA, a 12-week or 8-week Pre-sessional English scholarship is available to applicants whose standard of English does not meet UEA’s course requirements.
The successful applicants will receive:
- Full tuition fee for a 12-week or 8-week pre-sessional course at INTO Norwich.
- A bursary of £1000 is also available to cover living costs whilst undertaking the course.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this Scholarship, applicants must:
a. Have applied for a place at UEA and met the offer conditions, except for the English
language requirement;
b. Have applied for a place at INTO Norwich for 12-week or 8-week pre-sessional
English and met INTO’s offer conditions.
c. Be recognised by the UK government as either: a Refugee, Humanitarian Protection,
an asylum seeker, or discretionary leave, or be of another forced-migration
immigration status.
If the successful applicant is of an immigration status that makes them ineligible to Student Finance funding, a Sanctuary Scholarship (fees and bursary) will be guaranteed for their University course.
If the successful applicant is of an immigration status that makes them eligible for Student Finance, it is expected that the applicant will apply for Student Finance and fund their course as a Home student.
