The Schools of Sanctuary initiative celebrates the good practice of schools who welcome asylum seeking and refugee families into their school community and foster a culture of welcome and inclusion for all. Fourteen schools in Norfolk have already achieved School of Sanctuary status and there are more than 60 schools actively involved in the local network.
We are proud to have supported the work of the Norwich Schools of Sanctuary initiative since 2017. UEA Schools of Sanctuary Lead, Deirdre Medler, plays a key role in the Norfolk SoS network, including representing the UEA on the SoS award committee and working with school partners in the network to develop and share good practice. Collaborative work to date has supported the development of ‘Norfolk Welcomes’ – a day of action to support education related to forced migration and progress towards developing a culture of welcome for those seeking sanctuary in the county’s schools.
