Sanctuary Scholarships 2022/3
UEA is committed to helping reduce the barriers to participation in Higher Education (HE) faced by those seeking sanctuary in the UK. For the 2022/23 academic year, UEA is delighted to offer Sanctuary Scholarships and Pre-sessional English Sanctuary Scholarships.
Please note that all scholarships are highly competitive but we encourage everyone who meets the eligibility criteria to apply.

Please note (as detailed in point 4) there is also The Clive Wilson Scholarship.
UEA Sanctuary Scholarships for those Without Access to Student Finance England
This scholarship will be awarded to at least two sanctuary seekers who have an immigration status which means that they do not qualify for support from Student Finance England including a person who is seeking asylum seekers in the UK, OR a person granted DiscretionaryLeave/ Humanitarian Protection in the UK, OR a Refugee (Leave to Remain)in the UK who is unable to qualify for support from Student Finance England
The successful applicants will receive:
- Full Tuition Fee Support. Students will be offered a 100% tuition fee waiver.
- Maintenance Support. In addition to a tuition fee waiver, students will be awarded a bursary of £9,000 a year towards living costs and course related expenses.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this Scholarship, applicants must:
a. Have applied for a place at UEA and met the offer conditions;
b. Be an asylum seeker in the UK, OR a person granted DiscretionaryLeave/ Humanitarian Protection in the UK, OR a Refugee (Leave to Remain) in the UK who is unable to qualify for support from Student Finance England;
c. Not apply for the MB/BScourse at the Norwich Medical School.
Preference will be based upon the following:
a)The Article 26 Principles selection framework, which explores the extent to which the award of a scholarship to the applicant will remove barriers the applicant faces to accessing Higher Education
b)Regional residence.
The successful applicants will receive:
- Full tuition fees and a bursary of up to £9000 to cover living costs whilst undertaking the course
UEA Sanctuary Scholarships for Sanctuary Seekers irrespective of status regarding Student Finance England
In response to the conflict in Ukraine the UEA has released a further three Masters scholarships. We welcome applications to these from anyone with a background of seeking sanctuary (including those who can access student finance England). For this scholarship you may have one of the following statuses:
- Asylum seeker
- DLR/LLR
- Refugee
- Humanitarian Protection
- Arrived under a Resettlement scheme such as the UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS), Afghan citizens Resettlement Scheme, Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (VPRS), Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme (Homes for Ukraine) or Ukraine Family Scheme
You may have another forced-migration immigration status – please feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss this.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this Scholarship, applicants must:
a.Have applied for a place at UEA and met the offer conditions;
b.Have a background of seeking sanctuary
c.Not apply for the MB/BScourse at the Norwich Medical School.
The successful applicants will receive:
- Full tuition fees and a bursary of up to £9000 for one year
The selection panel will take the following factors into consideration:
a.Barriers to accessing higher education
b.Academic Potential and ambitions for the future
c.Potential contribution to the UEA and local community
UEA/INTO UEA Pre-sessional English Scholarship
In partnership with INTO UEA, a Pre-sessional English scholarship is available to applicants whose standard of English does not meet UEA’s course requirements.
The successful applicants will receive:
- Full tuition fee for a pre-sessional course at INTO Norwich.
- A bursary of up to £1000 is also available to cover living costs whilst undertaking the course.
Eligibility
1.To be eligible for this Scholarship, applicants must:
a.Have applied for a place at UEA and met the offer conditions, except for the English language requirement;
b.Have applied for a place at INTO Norwich’spre-sessional Englishcourseand met INTO’s offer conditions.
c.Be recognised by the UK government as either: a Refugee, Humanitarian Protection, an asylum seeker, or discretionary leave, or be of another forced-migration immigration status.
The UEA Clive Wilson Scholarship
The Clive Wilson Scholarship is available for students who are either:
- A student with a background of seeking sanctuary (a background of seeking sanctuary includes individuals who define themselves as refugees or are currently seeking asylum) who has applied to study a 3 year undergraduate course at UEA.
- A Home/UK applicant who has applied to study a 3 year undergraduate course in either Engineering or International Development.
The successful applicants will receive:
-An annual bursary of £5000 for three years.

Preparing for University-Online Course
UEA offers a free online course which explores the following areas:
- the skills needed to do well at university
- engage with the key skills required for success at university
- identify with what university lecturers have to say about skills their students excel at or struggle with
- explore what lecturers value in their students
- collect top tips for coping with the university learning environment
